..i dont have petrol turbo so ive never used it before..

but various oils are recommended by different brands.

comma recommend their SYNER-G 5W40 FULLY SYNTHGETIC.

whereas MILLERS (i use their PD oil) recommend 0W30 LONGLIFE FULLY SYNTHETIC..have you asked VW? what does the handbook say?

Mine runs on Mobil One 0w-40 and seems happy all year round. It ain't the cheapest oil out there but works pretty well as far as I can tell. Tried 10w-40 previously but I reckon the 0w-40 is better for the cold morning starts.

I have used Mobil 1 in my GTI turbo twice now, first time was fine but i have just done an oil change and used Mobil 0/40 again and its tappy (like tappet noise) when cold now, very odd, i am thinking of changing it for some 10/40 just to see if i can cure the tap.

I guess pope1 yours is fine on mobil 1 0/40?

I have just done my second mobil 1 0-40 change, the car runs sweet but its a little tappy at idle, i started a thread about it but have come to the conclusion that they are not the quietest engines ever made and its probably ok, just a bit tappy thats all, when cold more than when warm, not very noisy really but noticeable nevertheless, and no its not the charcoal filter or injectors, but they are noisy too.

Anybody else noticed there engine is a bit tappy at idle?

I stuck some 10-40 fully synthetic millers in instead to see if it made a difference but its the same.

I think fully synthetic is best though, i wouldnt put semi in personally, maybe i'm wrong, could be the cause of my tappy engine.

what do VW recomend for the non long life service cars? ie the ones on 10k service interval?

Cheers

Tim

Mobil1 0W40

Expensive but well worth it IMO! If you know someone with a costco account, you can pickup 4l for 20 sheets. Shame you need about 4.2 LMFAO

Paid about double that for my last lot! [:'(] Sounds like an ideal candidate for a group buy since Costco is about volume purchasing anyway. Any Costco members on here?

I have a little question.

My VW specialist told me that, semi syntehtic was better for an older engine, as it wouldn't leak through any seals as it was slightly thicker, and would stick to the components better.

However,

another source told me that Fully synthetic would get to the Turbo quicker on a cold day.

The VW specialist then replied that all oil is virtually the same when warm, not identical, but very similar, so as long as you had a good quality oil, and was at the corrrect level, your engine will look after itself.

Which of the above are true, or are they both talking crap!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers guys................................

the 0w40 stands for the density of the oil and also what temperature the oil will reach optimum performance so most good quality oils will reach the turbo in the same amount of time when warm but its when the oil is cold that you need to worry.

you are recomended that on any "sports car" that you use a fully synthetic oil such as mobile one 0w40, that on any car that has done over 100thousand miles they recomend a semi synthetic 15w30 due to the fact of wear on the componants and also as mentioned the seals/gaskets weaken with age.

hope this has helped you all

P.S i have had my mk4 gti turbo for over two years now and i have done a basic service on her every 6k just to be nice to her. i have always used mobile one 0w40 oil but i get it for free from work wich is a bonus. i was recomended this oil from a vw mechanic also.

Synta Gold fully Syn for me [Y].......car has run on it all its life so far....and will continue too......5W-40 and VW approved......pretty cheap too if you get it from GSF or pick some up at the shows through the year.....[;)]

im not doubting the likes of Mobile 1/ Castrol RS for quaility by any means....(have used them both in the past in other cars)....but you cant go wrong with VAG approval......(is also rated by alot of tuners too)

I was told be a good mechanic m8 to use fully syn 5w-40 .. I used valvoline {spelling} but that was expensive .

I was better off using the same as what N15CKO has mentioned above & I have seen this oil in the Vw parts department aswell but its cheaper in GSF iirc ..

10w40 is the grade VW recommend. However, I would avoid Comma like the plague - that's cheap stuff and arguably, oil is the most important component in the engine of your car. I will only use Castrol in any of my cars, however, as an alternative Mobil 1 also has a good reputation. Both, I would say, are head and shoulders above the standard VW rubbish. However, it's the frequency of oil changes that matters just as much.
