I've put a few offers in for R32's now, all of them being turned down, people still seem to think that R32's are worth 17k plus as they are in 'good condition'. Seen one on ebay 3 times now that I have put an offer in twice for, the person won't let it go for under 17k though realisticly its worth 15k and it's not even reaching that on ebay.

All the rest are miles and miles away.

So, I have been looking at other cars. The S3 in particular. I like the car, and have come across a couple within a good distance that I could have for about 8k with 70k on the clock, both being a W reg.

So I would be saving 7k over the R32. However, I don't wanna go and get an S3 and regret not buying an R. Theres an R local to me but the trader won't let me test drive it, said openly that he thinks I just want a drive. Think he looked at the Mk3 I turned up in. So told him where to go and I deffo had the cash ready to buy with no part exchange and the mk3 was just a runaround. He changed his tune, and offered a test drive and a coffee. I got in my car and drove off.

Basically all R32's are miles away, talking around 180 miles.

So, anyone got any comments on the S3? I'd get the same speed, but more MPG and I'd get the 1.8T hairdryer engine again, which I was completely put off based on my experience with the golf. Forever going wrong. Air this, air that, meter this, flow that!

Any help would be appriciated. The S3 just doesnt have the stand out factor and basically looks like a standard A3 if you get my sense? The S3 for 8k has had the revo treatment.

Yep, seen that one and enquired about it.

Not going to be buying it. Theres a couple of reasons why it's still sitting there with 600 miles on the clock at a good price! That's all im saying. Maybe just me being paranoid.

It's the R32 that I want, just no ones budging on prices which the car isn't actually worth. The S3 is 7k cheaper than what I'm willing to spend on an R, and fast and a nice car, just doesnt have the looks I don't think?

The S3 / A3 got facelifted around about W reg. The later ones have a
slightly different dash and nicer one piece headlamps. I think that
you'll find that S3s suffer from the same afflications as a Golf 1.8T,
such as MAF and water pump failures. The other thing to watch for is
the display for the drivers information system which tends to fade
around the edges and is around £350 for a replacement exchange unit
from the stealers.

I will probably get shot down in flames for this, but it is only my opinion and you can do with it what you want.

Personally, I fail to see what the big deal is with the R32, especially for the money they command. For sure they look good, sound great and have better handling and more grip than any "lesser" Golf and it is the flagship top of the range model.

However, my lowly, old mannish poor mans Bora (mapped AUQ 1.8T Toledo) is faster than an R32, proved more than once now. Hairdryer engine or not (and to be honest it sounds OK with a full milltek and induction mods), with £1k-£1.5k spent on it, you will have R32 performance from an AUM or AUQ 1.8T. Yes they will still be minus the V6 growl and will have no comparative grip, especially in the wet, out of corners etc etc and you wont have the satisfaction of owning the top spec Golf, but if it is performance you are after (and you don't buy an R32 for its economy) there are alternative options.

The S3 you mentioned with the 210bhp engine (in the early S3's) is easily tunable like the lesser 1.8T's and with the same money as the AUM/AUQ, you can see 270+bhp. Therefore it is cheaper than the R32 when modded, has 4x4 grip and handles well, looks good etc.

Take off your VW/Audi/VAG Group blinkers for a second (why do some people only consider VAG cars?). There are other cars which do the same job better than both of these. How about a Subaru Impreza Turbo/WRX/STi? The flat four beat, and 300bhp from the STi PPP as standard, enough to leave both a mapped S3 and R32. Alternatively how about a Lancer evolution, the ultimate rally car on the road?

Then again, for the money you are talking about spending, how about a brand new Focus ST and enjoy 3 years af warrantied motoring? You are not going to lose any more on it than you would running an R32. Alternatively, you could go old school and buy a car that appreciates in value and even as standard could pretty well live with an R32/S3 - step forward the Escort RS Cosworth, Lancia Delta Integrale or 80's Audi Quattro, or the 90's S2? Then there is the luxurious, stealth and very under-rated S60R AWD Volvo. There are so many more to choose from.

Again, why stick to Volkswagen/Audi/VAG group? In my opinion, some people are narrow minded when it comes to cars and only ever stick to one brand/group. I have only ever bought the same marque twice (Honda), and that said, I still reckon they are the best I have had. That said, why not look at an S2000, Civic Type R or new style Integra Type R? Awesome cars.

You can't though, thats the problem. The one on ebay had 39,000 on the clock, 03 reg, leather/suede, wasn't near to me, 94 miles away, but thats worth it. Got to 14500 and still hadn't reached the reserve so enquired about it. He won't let it go for under 16.5k, and that would be at a push. Enquired about another 2 on ebay, one which has been relisted twice now, 18,300 miles, also wants 16.5k or with a service 17k.

The only one I am interested in is 167k away. 15k to buy from a trader, 23,000 miles, sat nav included. However, phoned and they won't give me any information about it other than whats on the website and won't do test drives on saturday or sunday. So that's me knackered. That one also says 'one of special, 290bhp' so not sure what's been done to it, which is what I was enquiring about.

All the rest are just massively overpriced.

Forgot to add, you quite often have to travel to find the Unicorn mate. I came near your area for my Toledo (Aberdeen to Bournemouth). A car is a big spend and you have to live with it. Surely it is worth the time and effort to look at the better ones even of they are a fair bit away?

Why not an Audi RS2, that is ONE HELL of a car for the money your looking to spend. OK they are getting on a bit but with over 300 bhp std you'll destroy most cars, esp an R32s and S3s.

Jason, will still have the MK3 diesel for thw work run and insurance isn't a problem, £500, £580 with a second car added (mk3). The intrest pays for the R32 loan which I would get.

DJ. See where your coming from, but wanted an R32 for about 4 years now. It's NOT just the performance I'm after, I love the looks and presence of the car and the interior is spot on in my eyes.

Had my mate suggest a few cars and the S3, because of the interior basically and same speeds roughly is the only one that comes close.

Civic Type R, hate the interior. Scooby, couldn't be arsed with the red light rally every time I stop at lights. I know I will get that with an R, but not half as much I shouldnt think. Evo, yer, fine, but major costs when it goes wrong. Again, interior is japanese, which usually spells out pants.

The 1.8T engine, I'm just not struck on, in any car. However, I'd sacrifice my paranoia for 4wd and a nice interior, plus the speed and 6 gears, I only had the non mapped 150 engine. Once bitten though....

It's not about being narrow minded, it's just literally that I have loved the car since it's come out. However, the MKV R32 does nothing for me. The S3 is the only one my mates come up with thats interested me to be honest.

Fair post. However, do you honestly think that an R32 is any less likely to be a target for the "red light rally" than a Subaru?

I would go test a Subaru STi before you go and write them off so quickly. There are a fair few post bug-eye facelift version Subaru Impreza STi's going cheaper now that the new model is out.

Yup, do think you would have less of that in an R32. Obviously you would get a lot of it, but not as much as a sooby I don't think. Scooby, with it's presence just says race me!

I've still got my R32 because I love the car. Sure, there are other cars about that are faster/better/etc for the money, but the R32 is the car I like.

Also, posted this in another topic, but maybe my Milltek system will help you choose:

The more I have thought about this, the more I disagree.

The Subaru's presence would be more likely to make people wary of it and therefore less likely to go for a race off the lights as 99 times out of 100 the Subaru would be the faster car. As the R32 is also more likely to be the faster car at a set of lights, but being less powerful, heavier and therefore slower than the rally rep's (STi's and Evo's) they would be therefore, arguably, be more of a target. Add to that the fact that so many modified lesser mk4 Golf's now have R kits and driven by nuggets, the chances of an R32 being challenged at the lights is again higher.

FYI, I very rarely, if ever, get a challenge from any car off the lights when I am on the R1 as 999 times out of 1000, the R1 will be faster than pretty well anything that comes next to it except for another superbike. But bikes dont race bikes at traffic lights due to mutual respect.
