Hi All

Just wondering what you all think of your Golf mk5 sound system, as I think the old mk4 Gamma system sounded a lot better Quality.

The mk5 system pumps out too much mid tones and is not as good at the thumping deep bass as the mk4

Would a speaker change help or is it the head unit thats at fault?

I don't want to change the head unit for an aftermarket one, would the sat nav unit be any better?

Any ideas

i now have a full kicker component system in the front of the car and kicker speakers in the rear doors, it sounds good now with the standard head unit but an upgrade would be better, the original speakers are poo poo so replace them first followed by a new H/U

There "appears" to not be quite enough power to drive all 10 speakers. Very obvious distortion at higher volume. Rasmus "Dead Letters" CD is awful. However I am not inclined to go for one of these aftermarket solutions as I think it takes away from the look of the dash

I agree with Costal. I think that a decent amp wired from the factory head unit to a decent set of speakers would make the world of difference. Im also reluctant to move from the factory head unit too as I also have the 6cd changer in the armrest which would be made redundant if I ripped the head unit out.

The Mk5 philips speaker equipped cars are very poor in my opinion.

I wish VW would learn, more speakers does not make a better sound system!!

The speaker placement from an acoustic and image point of view is all wrong too.

I would gladly sacrifice the bottle holder for the Mk4's far superior speaker positions in this respect.

The headunit is quite good its the speakers that are the main problem, mind its not that powerfull and this is were aftermarket ones score.

I wonder if the headunit has pins you can make into a pre-out RCA lead like the Mk4 headunits did?

I just fitted a Sony 'sound on top amp' to the standard headunit. It very much improves the sound over standard at lower volumes and it really fills out the sound. However, turn it up and the speakers soon give way and the sound distorts massively, it just acnnot handle the bass.

Was bored in the car on the motorway yesterday and dug out a Fuel bass CD which seriously highlighted the limits of the standard speakers and the need for some Dynamat!

I have been searching allover the internet for details on the sound systems (cant find much on the RCD500) however i have come across a site which I think gives details on how to switch the speaker outputs on the RCD500 and maybe the RCD300 into line level outputs. Unfortunately the site is in German so I cannot be sure babelfish isnt much help either!

Here is the link:

http://de.openobd.org/vw/rns.htm#radio6

The site is also in english however there are no links to those pages!

I am just guessing here from what babelfish said but if theres someone who speaks german, and could have a look that would be great! [:D]

Hey scuk - I have the same problem.

I was going to run an active sub of the rear feeds but after I spoke to the VW technician (when he came out to fix the CD skipping problem)he said that the feeds are disabled. Only option it to replace the current speakers with ones that can handle the bass, or go for another HU. I think I will just take it to a stereo specialist and see what they can do. Maybe they can split the front feeds and send bass to the back?
