Wheel wax is a good product mate, it gives the alloy a protective layer
and it's a lot more easiar to clean when all the brake dust is on the
alloy it just sponges off, But apply it all over the alloy and don't
miss any spots so you'll have perfect alloys for a long time. Also
apply it once a month it won't need doing every week.

Having read the website it says to put the product straight on without cleaning the wheels first!

Is this right - can anyone tell me how they apply it?

Apply it as you was going to polish your car, so apply it to the alloys let it dry off and then hand buff it off.

I used to use Turtle Wax, and to be honest any quality wax would do a good job (most alloys have the same kind of painted finish as the car body) but now I only use Metal Mate, it's far more permanent than wax (because it's not wax, it's essentially a form of plastic coating) and is even offered as a pre-delivery option by Mille Miglia:

I use the wheel wax, and it's good stuff as a protectant. I wouldn't
say it's a brilliant cleaner though, but I had got my wheels clean
before I used the wax. It didn't lift off the little bits of baked on
stuff.

I bought wheel wax.

It's alright in what it does, it's just I don't think its worth the effort to be honest.

It will take u atleast an hour (15 mins each wheel) to do it
properly. And then you'll find that brake dust still sticks to
the wheel anyway.

A few car washes later, and you'll notice that the wheel wax effect has
pretty much gone (and thats just using warm water to clean the wheels
with)

If u wanna keep your wheels clean, then the easiest thing to do is clean them atleast once a week.

If u do insist on waxing your wheels, then ANY wax will do the same job

I just wash my wheels once/twice a week with MC2 when washing the car and make sure I do inside the wheel too and that keeps them new looking.

That sounds good, where can that be bought from? Can it be bought as a DIY kit?

Agreed but I have found waxing will reduce the little 'burnt on' spots of brake dust that look like little tear spots and are normally very hard to shift.

As said earlier any good wax will do.

I've used wheelwax for about two years and only apply it twice a year. It makes washing the wheels a doddle!!!

I've tried other waxes on other sets of wheels and done like a different wax on each wheel test and i'm sticking to the wheel wax stuff, it don't scratch the coating like some waxes do.

Bit expensive though. Mind i'm still on the same tub and i've done 5 sets of wheels - some more than twice this year already!!

That reminds me, i need to clean my car after it's 2k mile trip round scotland, the wheels are nearly black!![]

Other than soap and water I dunno how an application of wheel wax twice a year will last more than one wash to make them easier to clean.

Waxing wheels is good, however if your using chemicals to wash them regularly its pointless. For alloys with a compleicated design (loads of spokes) it will take you forever to do which is why very regular cleaning would be a better option!

Just been giving my wheels a bit of TLC and all I used was AutoGlym
Silicon Resin Polish. Wheel Cleaners all seem to remove the Brake
Dust, but my biggest problem is Tar Spots - and I was clean out of
Intensive Tar Remover.

i heard that a rag doused in petrol will take tar spots off your wheels!!

I just only use water and a bit of gentle rubbing to clean the muck and brake dust off.

I only top up with wheelwax when the dirt doesn't come off easily and when i've got tar spots (bloody road works!!).

I won't use chemical cleaners as they can damage the coating and if you've got a stone chip they can damage the wheel.

I've used parafin to remove really bad patches of tar before, basically anything that's fairly flammable does a cracking job!!![]

there is no short cut to wheel maintenance........

get out there with a bucket and sponge and clean them regularly......stubborn bits use a claybar......then use ANY wax to help protect......but no wax will stop them needing cleaning...
