hey(why do i always write that)

Right here we go, (will u be able to read the entire post), firstly i am sorry if u have heard so many reviews of the GTI, but id like to add my spin on it. Arrived at the dealer and they took me to the car still grasping the keys. OH dear i thought, gonna have some stealer dude sitting next to me saying snidy comments. Got to the car and he threw me the keys. I quote "you obviously know about your golfs, here's the keys, i dont want to know what you do to the car, just bring it back in once piece in an an hour please"[:D][:D] i had a big grin on my face.

Strapped in, the car was standard apart from the leather seats,(i would wait for the recaros mid 2005 if i were you) Turn the key and wait for the heating plugs, DO'h im not in a tdi anymore[^]

At idle the engine is very quiet and you cant hear the exhaust, but blip the throttle and u know its got some potential. The exhaust backfires and gurgles almost like Roysters R32. Wave goodbye to the dealer and tried not to stall her as i drive away.

First test, top speed![:D] i thought i better as i am used to going fast for a living. i floored the car on a duel carriage way up a hill and kept my eyes outside the car because when your going fast you dont want to look in! 2nd to 70. 3rd ,4th 5th, 6th still at full throttle, then.....

BEEP BEEP BEEP[:O] what the hell is that, i look down , warning your speeding on the dash, too dam right i am , silly car im trying to see if i should spend 22000 pounds on you!! (it kept showing this on the trip computer even after reseting it when i returned to the dealers, oops[:I])

I can best describe the engine as a chipped tdi at the bottom end without any turbo lag and a mk216v at the top end. so there is pull all the way thru the rev range and i mean all the way, at 70 in 2nd! yes 2nd the car was still giving me power(on that note dont buy this ex demo car)have it in any gear at most speeds and when u floor it you wont be dissappointed.

The handling, little or no body roll compared to the mkiv, no annoying torque steer, i could not fault it at all. the roads were damp but i prefer that because u get a warning before the car swops ends imo, she held the road well and you could feel what the car was doing . i drifted around some wet but quiet roundabouts. as with most front wheel drive cars if u go too far it will understeer, lift off and the car is stable and will happily slide sideways all day.add the handbreak and she'l do lot more. the rear brakes are greet for handbreak turns, which is good if i have to get out of a situation. sorry back to the car,

i drove hard upto 70 then kept doing emergency stops and the car behaves well. the brakes dont fade and if your not lined up straight if doesnt feel uncomfortable. now for the head turning bit.

drove through a 30 limit and no one noticed but as i left the 30zone i floored her in 2nd and some guys on the pavement were grinning as i speed off down the road, the turbo does a little whoosh when u change gear and lift off.

Now here comes the fun part, I MET A TT.. only a 180 bhp version. wow that was fun i had the edge once the cars were moving and the golf reved louder. thats what i loved about the exhaust. it can be quiet when needs be but sexy when needs be to. While i was at a junction a guy in a CTR stopped and looked at the car, he nodded aprovingly as i sat in a bright red gti, I gave it some blips of the throttle and he had big grin on his face.

i returned to the dealers an hour later with the car, i had driven it to the limit and beyond and was happy. BUT i got out the car and looked around it. the back end looks awful, so fat and over weight which is a big turn off, i gave the keys back and got back in my tdi. i prefer the mkiv interior,

anyway, did i like the car yes, am i gonna spend alot of cash on it, no. i think im gonna wait a while till they throw some more tempting sutff into the deal and get the s3 in the meantime. im sorry if i wrote a long review but i made notes on my knee pad while i drove around to help me write this. thanks for reading this and im sorry if it sounds like so many other reviews.

Totally and utterly pointless and stupid in my opinion.

Look im not trying to get all self-righteous and arsey with you, it's just my opinion thats all... and i just cant see the point in taking a car that fast and risking a license for a quick thrill in a car that isnt even yours [:)]

I think Ian may have been expressing a bit of poetic licence?[:)][;)][?]

Like when Wayne and I abused our test run with extreme roundabout work![:p][:O][)]

Good review Ian! Like my R eh?

Why is it all demos have leather interior?[)]

Chris - I respect your views most of the time but i do believe you did come over self-righteous for a moment mate.

Driving anywhere requires skill and concentration.

I expect Ian's driving experience and flying skill came into play when he weighed up the conditions and the clear road ahead.....

Thing is, you are testing a car after all and without private facilities, what else can you do if you WANT to test the upper speed range?

Ian's choice - enuff said?

To round this off on a similar note, my 50-year old business partner had a tour of a well known UK sports car factory three weeks ago, and to cap it off he and the other club members were wizzed at some 130-150mph in the latest models on the public road by test drivers.

For what it's worth, if i'd had the chance, and the road was clear, i'd always give a test drive car some stick.....

I reckon may try t get a go in one of these too, but I have to say it sounds all probabably pretty similar to my mk4 with all the Koni bits and bobs on. Possibly a slightly less harsh ride, but I'm not sure how much better the mk5 will be to a nicely sorted k03s chipped mk4 18T.

........I'll have to find out I suppose! Be an interesting comparison to the Mitsu Evo I tried a couple of weeks back. The Evo demo with 2k miles was for sale for less than 20k!

Thank you guys for the vote of confidence, for a moment there i felt like i was the only one who has ever been over 70mph, if i had passengers in the car or the road was busy then i would never consider going fast again,i even told my bro not to come along so i didnt risk his life. i am one of those annoying drivers who will do 20 in a 20zone ,30 in a 30 and so on. then when it goes into a 60,il floor it but stop at 60 dead and i mean 60, when i am driving a car i am making the same descions and thought processes as i do when im flying, you have more margin for error in a car.plus to fly a plane well you have to know how it handles in all areas of its perfomance envelope.its the same with the test drive, you find out what the car can do at all speeds so you can remember how it handles . so its not a big shock when your life depends on it and you've never been there in the car or plane. sorry if this reply is getting deep but i dont want to come accross as a boy racer with too much money to burn.(those of you who have met me and driven with me i hope they see that i am not one)

To me, the point of this GTI is not about the grey interior or the rear valance. It's about the drive - and it does that bit exceptionally well.

What was said above made me think - if someone (ANYONE!!) is that against speeding then why buy a Golf with 180 bhp over a Golf with 75 bhp for example? You wanted the GTI trim? Then retro fit it.

I don't believe anyone who says they never speed or risk their licence when they buy a high powered version of a car that is available with a 1.4 engine.

Just my view [:)]
