How can you test your alarm?

Reading on someone elses post about the boot open alarm on the dash. I thought I would try to open the boot while the car alarm is enabled.

To my disgust the hazards flash but there is no siren.

Anyone else have this problem? and is it a job for the stealers?

The best way I find to test the alarm is to leave a window open and lock the car. Wait for the alarm to activate (think its about a min) then just wave your arm inside the car. The movement sensor picks it up and hey presto - you go deaf!!! [:D]

if you lock your car and then again hold down the lock button your alarm should sound!! i knew golfs did this as my friends does but it was only once i dis-connected the battery that it worked (must have reset something, making it work properly).sometimes i unlock the car then a coupleof mins later the car locks itself back up again[:p]

to set off the car alarm roll down the drivers door window, lock the car, then pull the bonnet open thru the window and the siren shud sound.

however i dont think the siren is that loud [:S] compared to toher sirens.

also, are the horn and the siren sounds both emitted from the same module cos the siren sounds as if someone is just holding in the horn

I am taking this thread to life because I have a similar doubt with my OEM alarm in my 2002 Golf GTI. I was testing my car alarm before install a shock and microwave sensor and I can not make the alarm sounds.

I activate it through the key fob inside the car, try to open any door and it doesn't let me out, door pins gets out and down, turns on cluster and interior light and nothing happends, open the hood and nothing happends. When I arm the alarm, siren makes it normal beep, driver door led blinks and all doors and hatch are closed.

Friends I need some advice, does it is normal? what else can be done to test it? or maybe my alarm has some features disable?

I need your advice and comments

Thanks,

Elio the easiest way to test it as already stated is by opening the bonnet as I've never known that switch to go wrong, and your additional sensors should be wired up to that anyway and nowhere else,it is a thin brown/red wire at the CCM (Central Conveniance Module) located just above the relay rack to the right of the steering column.

For me, I have to wait exactly two minutes before the alarm is activated i.e. if I sit in my car and lock with the keyfob, the siren will go off exactly two minutes later - so give that a try.

Though does anyone know if the two minute can be reduced?

I have a sneaking suspicion my Bora doesn't have an alarm either.

Its a 99 V5 Aust spec and is supposed to have an alarm fitted as standard. When i arm it, the locking works, flashing light goes on but ive sat inside and moved around and no alarm. I cant ID any motion detectors. I recall from a thread on here motion sensors are supposed to be attached to the rear interior lights? and there should be a sensor deactivation button on the middle pillar? Mine doesnt have any sensors near the lights or the disarm button - am i right in assuming no alarm then? Or are the sensors located somewhere else?

The only other thing that remotely looks like a motion sensor is a little plastic T in the middle on top of the windscreeen heating vent, i dont know what this is - anyone know?

The quickest way to check is arm or lock it whilst sitting inside, and then after a minute or more, pull the bonnet release which will trigger it if it has an alarm fitted.

Hey thanks Chris...you're right tried it out and the alarm went off when I popped the bonnet. Still no response to interior motions so im guessing that the alarm is only on the doors, boot, bonnet on some models? Where are the motions sensors normally?

Hi

is your car an import? If it is this would explain that you have an alarm but no interior monitoring. I looked into importing a MkIV Golf a while back alarm was standard but interior monitoring was an option with the Trip computer. If you have the sensors they would either be on the front pilars (I had these on my old MkIV, you would also find that you don't get a flip key with this sort) or they are built into the rear cabin lights above the rear doors.

Lols...well im in Australia actually so the car was imported by VW lols...sold by VW not a private import so to speak. Spec wise its aV5 and out here all V5's seemed to come speccd up with a lot of stuff like Leather, heated seats, climatronic, cruise, trip computer, also has the flip key. Yer have had a look for sensors where u mentioned and cant find any so mine must have just been a doors only alarm without motion sensors for some reason. Maybe they think car theft isnt much of a problem down under....wierd Krauts! Cheers guys.
