Hi

So glad I found a MK4 forum as I need a bit of advice as I'm new to cars.

I got an old MK4 1.4 16v 1999 AHW Engine, changed the air filter and decorbonised the engine but its still using a lot of oil.

I put 10w40 in her but if you check out the pics Im getting alot of oil in the vent hose that is attched to the right side of the air filter box and some gathers in the box just out side the throttle body.(pic is before new air filter).

It has a new rocker head seal done so would a catch can sort this out or new gasket set.

Even the hose is knackered as its buckled.

Please help.

I would have said your oil seporator is blocked, I changed mine last week and it was full of mayo and the vent hose like yours was full up

he's a pic of the oil seporator I removed and replaced with the new one on the right

Thanks for the reply, I ckecked out this manual on line for the AHW oil seporator, is this an easy job to fit?

Also I read in an old post a guy had the same mayo problem with the Breather hose (pn 036 103 474 M) and he disconnected it...is that safe?

on line manual -

Yes it's a fairly easy job, I did it from underneath and it took around 15 mins to change over, I cleaned out the pipe with a bottle brush and a rag and did it at the same time as doing an oil change

Personally I wouldn't just disconnect it it's not really going to acheive anything by doing so, apart from covering your subframe in oil mayo residue
ok I have seen one on ebay £73

or the catch can a cheaper option £24

alos got info from another source quoting-

"if heave oil deposits are coming trough the breather then you may have
other problems, such as worn piston rings causing exsessive blow by
resulting in the oil being in the intake box, a filter will only create
a restriction coursing more poblems, do a compresion and cylinder leak
down test to find out how well the rings are sealing"

looks like a trip to the mechanics

This is the one I bought http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/301412322001 excellent price and postage was 2 or 3 days from Germany
Cheers...but has this new fitting cured your mayo problem or has it reduced the oil you use?
Yes to both, as my engine is now breathing properly the mayo issue is generally caused by poor servicing in the past so make sure you keep up the oil changes on a regular basis
The biggest cause of mayo is short trips, poor oil quality and engine design or a mixture of all 3 (providing the head gasket isn't gone). My 2.0 gti was terrible for it despite 2 oil changes a year with genuine oil, my daily commute was not long enough for the engine to get to full temp for long enough. If you give it a good run it totally disappeared on its own.
It helps if you thermostat is 100% functional
If the pipework is collapsed or narrow this will cause excess mayo and may increase oil use. If it was me I'd replace with the link above then monitor it for a few months and see how it goes, if it hasn't cured it add a catch can.
Many thanks footmania and doddy666 for this very helpfull info as i have been running in circles with this one.

A brakers yard has an oil seporator going cheap so i will try it first also i need to ask you guys what oil is best for this old bird.?

...its a 1999 AHW Golf MK4 petrol and I was told to use 10w40. 5 ltr of this last me 700-800 miles. Sounds bad I know and my trips are 15 mile to work and 15 mile back.

If you ever sse a breather pipe let me know as i have looked every were and no luck.

5 litres in 800miles is a massive amount to use in that distance.
I suggest you get a compression test done before you spend any money on it
My old 1.4 still uses a lot of oil, I used to start a 185 mile journey with a full dipstick and by the end it would be touching the minimum mark. I had it compression tested and it all checked out fine, mechanic reckoned oil rings could be gone but compression rings still holding hence the compression test checking out. This one also has shit loads of mayo in the breather and oil all over the air filter, a friend of mine bought it off me cheap, and I'm planning to go up and give the breather assembly a proper clean out when I get the chance. I've also heard the EGR valve can clog up on these engines, is this true?

Yes the EGR can clog and they are known to fail, I took mine off and just cleaned thougherly with carb cleaner
I may have that hose lying around, i have just removed virtually everything off my 1.4 AHW as i am ditching the engine.

Back on the usage, they do use oil because of how much you have to rev them but your consumption does seem excessive. I would expect to use around 1L

(Max-Min on the dipstick) If the rings are going then it would cause the excessive pressure in the crankcase, pushing all your through that trap and fumes back into the inlet.

My original engine had headgasket failure, so i replaced that and it was still ran poor so i suspect rings were also going on that one!
Hi Matt

If you do have the breather hose let me kmow and i shall purchase it from you, looks like I will be visiting the mechanic over this oil /mayo issue.

Could be new rings, EGR, head gasket, compression test, oil seporator all to be tested.

Thanks to all for the tips.
