Im absolutely stumped for ideas here, but basically, my DVD drive is
still working fine, except for the fact that it doesn't recognise blank
DVDs (i.e. I cant copy anything onto DVD).

It still plays DVDs/CDs

It will gladly copy a CD

etc

What could be wrong?

I've put the same DVD into my laptop and it's recognised within seconds!

I confused (again!) ...

Your DVD drive might not recognise it because it might not be built for it. IE it could be a DVD+R and yours is built to read DVD-R or something along those lines.

Have a look at the old DVD's you used to use succesfully and what your using now.

Thats what I thought, but nope! All the DVDs are DVD-R.

About 10 days ago I filled a DVD with mp3 albums & I cant do that very same task now. Nor can I even burn a DVD!

Its a strange one!

What are you using to burn the dvd's with?

If it is windows then the speed may need setting, which you do by right click the dvd writer drive in my computer and s electing the recording tab and s elect a speed which matchs your dvd's or below the dvd's speed, this is because the drive may be too fast for the dvd.

Hope this helps

Im using Roxio.

I dont even get to the recording stage. Usually when I insert a blank
CD or DVD something happens (egg timer, new window opens etc) but there
is no difference between when a DVD is in or when the drive is empty!

What happens if you go into your Roxio software to try and burn the cd manaully? It may just be that you have disabled the program to start automatically whne you insert a blank DVD.

Roxio should detect speed automatically, have you installed itUNES or has quick time been installed as the latest version of quick time has iTunes on it, iTunes has been know to disable CD and DVD drives on certain machines depending on the hardware spec.

If you have any of the above try this here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320553/sd=RMVP but be careful if you do make registry changes, be sure to back it up first before trying the above fix.

This might sound an odd question, but do you play many games
on the system?

The reason I ask is I have heard of a lot of problems with
people running star force and other programs like it that stop people from accessing
there cd-rom drives, and in other circumstances slowing them down to a snails
pace.

I've not used this computer for a while, but the problem is still there.

I don't wanna go paying someone silly money to come out & look at it either!

Can I just uninstall/re-install the drive?

well i did a search on google for drivers and there doesnt seem to be any. (loads of ppl have problems with this drive)I suggest tha you go to

Control panel --> system--> hardware
--->Device Manager
--->CDROM drives

Then right click your drive and uninstall it and then reboot xp..if it does not solve your problem then i suggest that you buy a replacement :)
