Can anyone personally recommend a reasonable VW dealer/expert to change cambelt/perform 60,000 mile service in the Surrey area, or does ?600 seem reasonable??

Many thanks

No that's far too much.

?400 is about what you should be paying. I paid ?410 for the service, belt, tensioner and water pump.

Shop around and you should save quite a bit.

I can guarantee that you won't find a vw dealer that will do the 60K service, change cambelt, tensioner & water pump for ?400!

If you can prove me wrong and give us the dealers number and I will call (and save myself some money [:D])

Add about ?50-?80 to include the water pump, which is not needed to be replaced! All the dealers I called said it wasn't needed!

Well as I said, I paid ?410 for exactly that! Cheltenham VW, formerly CD Bramall.

Oh and VW specialist independents will be able to do it for about ?350
and still stamp your service book, as long as they stick to the
schedule.

Yep they charged me ?230 for the labour as well, parts and oil brought it to ?412.

Yours is a diesel though.

Maybe they'll throw in some free KY jelly for your quote!

Sheppherds in Stortford just quoted me 336 for the water pump and cambelt change plus 100 for an anual service ( special offer) plus 20 for a pollen filter, so about ?460 all in not bad I thought as VW in Truro quoted ?588 !

Diesels must be more to do work on then!

They quoted me ?209 for the service and ?349 just for the cam belt!

Well as Victor Meldrew would say, "I dont believe it"

Drove to dealers this morning, greeted at the entrance, whereby they took my car straight off me, while I check the car in. Booked in within minutes and they had no problem packing the original cambelts into the new boxes and leaving them in the boot for me. Impressive!!

Just had a phone call. Brakes and brake fluid need doing. Another ?200!!!!. Sorry I says, cant afford that this month. "Maybe we can help you" says the engineer. "Well unless you can offer it free or interest free credit for a couple of month, then no, you cant help" I says back. "Well maybe we can do something for you............" says engineer. Cut a long conversation short, they reduced the cost by nearly ?100.

Devil's advocate is that if they can do that for me if I cant afford it, why cant they do it all the time for everyone and it also shows how much they already shafting other people.

Still, I'm happy [:D]

That's very familiar! I had a phone call when they were doing mine,
saying the brakes needed changing, ?220 squid please. Instant anal
soreness.

They didn't offer me a discount mind so I got someone else to do it.

has anyone done a diy cambelt change?

I resent having to line the pockets of the local vw dealer and don't
feel that i should be paying ?70+/hour for some apprentice to be
handling my pride and joy.

my dad charges less than that, and he cuts people up!

My local stealer rate is 54.50 which i think is amazing they did say that they have two different labour charges one for newer cars and one for older models
