I have the chance of a September 2001 51 plate Passat TDi 130PD SE with
78k miles in metallic grey. How much should I look to pay for it? I
have been told a figure and wanted to see what the realistic figure is.

Also, how much is my 1998 R Plate Passat TDi 110 Sport in metallic blue worth - 81k miles. And does anyone here want to buy it?!

Ta,

Horace

Sonny, never use parkers as a guide when buying a car, you'll think your car is worth more than it is! For an average valuation use the valuation on www.theaa.co.uk and for a low valuation (useful when haggling!) use the whatcar valuation as they seem to value that bit lower from what I have seen. Parkers like to overestimate.

Not for me no, for a mate. I am on the lookout for a cheapish diesel and yours doesnt fall into the cheapish cat! Before I get you excited though I will get in touch with him then PM you if he expresses an intrest. He's out of the country at the moment for a while, but if he did want it, I would come and collect it (that will be a long drive!!)

Don't hold on my account though, if anyone wants it in the meantime, go ahead and sell it!!

Passats lose value a lot quicker than Golfs mate even though they cost more when new.

Without looking, at values, and from the top of my head, I would assume
you would get between ?5500 and ?7000 for your car. You would get a
newer Passat for that money, especially in a few months time when there
are a few new style ones on the road.

6-7 k rings for me, depends on the spec, also the se dont have six speed.  I recently bought 2 at the same time and paid ?800 more for a Y plt 2001 sport than I did for a 2001 51 plt se, with less miles on, however the sport, which I'm running, was spec't quite well.

thats a good deal, I looked for months for a high milage 130PD sport estate, stuff with 100,000 on wasn't going for less than ?6750. SE spec's where a bit cheaper at around ?6300, and then knock around 500 - 1000 off its a saloon

Thats an excellent deal!

Glass's guide (trade in calculator on Vauxhall website) says ?6200 for an average condition one on that milage!

Have you seen it? A word of warning- I've been looking for a 406 HDI estate for my in-laws and recently found a 2001 Y plate with 70k miles. It was advertised for ?5k, at least ?1.5k below all valuations, even with that milage. Went to have a look and the bodywork was excellent, and had all the toys (climate, auto lights/wipers, CD, electrics, alloys etc etc) but as soon as I took off I knew why it was cheap- the clutch and brakes were both completely knackered!

It's quite likely that a car which has done that many miles in 3 years has been a work horse and so may be in need of new brakes/clutch, especially if it has been used for towing.

So ?3500 to ?4000 would be a good deal then folks?! That is the price!
Bite his hand off.... go do it.. NOW!!!

I will know within a few weeks. The guy who drives it has my dads old
job and the mileage is mostly long running. It has a FVWSH and has
never had any bodywork done. It has 5 speed, grey interior,
climatronic, cd, alloys and all the usual SE toys. I am going to chase
it on tomorrow. Just back today from Africa.

at that price you can afford to do the clutch and brakes if need be.
Check the turbo out. Make sure it starts to pull at 1600rpm. Also give
it a good blast in 5th gear (about 80 if you can) and make sure it
doen't overboost. Although it should be ok if it was long journeys. I
had to replace the turbo on mine at 40.000. The Vanes were coked up.
Most likely by the previous owner nursing the car rather than driving
it how it was intended.
