Someone is bound to suggest the trolley jack and lump of wood method, this DOESN'T work other then jacking the car up,the door stays where it is relative to the car.

Remove the striker plate with an Emm 8 XZN or triplesquare bit (most definately NOT Torx[:(]) and loosen the door hinge bolts with an M10 XZN bit,10mm ring spanner and something for extra leverage because they will be VERY tight....

Loosen all of them then nip them up JUST tight enough so they grip but the door can be twisted by hand.It might be a good idea to put something soft and non-paint damaging under the very front as it's not as easy to get the gap right there as it is at the back of the door.Make sure the front top isn't too far out (not always obvious) as you'll get wind noise and it could leak.

Put the striker plate back and adjust it so if you shut the door with the handle pulled out it slides in easily without touching the sides[:D].

Cool very helpful thanks dude :) a star!
oooo yea been looking on how to do this and the trolly jack one popped up time after time good to get some info on the right way to do thins thanks [Y]
so you can adjust the door gap through the hinges? the guy at the garage did mine with the trolly jack method,as we were under the impression they wernt adjustable, seems to have worked though.

Sounds more like tthe guy at the garage was being lazy to me.The trolley jack methhod didn't work on mine and one other three door I tried it on hence doing it the "proper" way.

Chris.
Another "old skool" way is to add a shim between the hinge and the body pillar if you run out of adjustment to correct the problem.
Mine was full of wind noise at speeds over twenty!! Also there was an invoice from a VW garage for trying to rehang the door? (terrible job) Cracked off the hinge fixing to the door which allows adjustment in / out to cure wind noise, as for up and down you really need to undo the hinge to A panel bolts, bit tricky due to space and two of them are buried inside the A post!
