As you may know im going for 9.5" wide rims on the *** end of the golf. I want it to look pretty phat from behind (excuse the chav word there). So i was wanting to know if a 245-40-18 tyre will be ok on the rear of the golf? Im lowered appx 55mm on coilovers. What i dont want is the rear end scuffing and scrapeing around. Will i get that with a 245-40-18 tyre or should i just go for a 235-40-18? Cheers.

The profile is not a fixed amount, it is ratio of the width of the tyre. You will probably find that the wider tyre is similar in height to a narrower but larger ratio tyrewall

I don't know the exact figure calculation but I would imagine a 225/40/18 would look similar to a 245/35/18... hope that makes sense??[?]

Yep like what Evilhomer said! BMWs that have 18x8 fronts and 18x8.5 rears use 225 40 fronts amnd 255 35 rears! they look the same but obviously the 255 is wider!

Same with 245 35 mate, it will look the same as a 225 40 tyre.

The 235 40 will be a touch fatter then a 225 40 ....

You should be fine I am running 18-8.5inch et 35 offset rims with 225/40 rubber and 15mm spacers and have very few probs with rubbing, only when I am fully loaded do i get rubbing when driving fast on Mway.

You should also look at different makes of tyre if you want that stretch look as some do it better than others, dunlop are good and favoured with the EURO boys, stay clear of yoka's as mine do not allow the rim to protrude as much as the pirelli's hope this helps.

cheers for the input. i know which tyre brand im going for, and im not really that bothered about the stretched look. I really dont want to be putting a lower profile than 40 anywhere on the golf. If that is the case that i have to go 35 profile on the 9.5's i'll sack that idea off and go for 8.5x18" all round with 225/40/18 all round. Sadly it just wont look as phat from behind.

Mike dont go for something you dont want let me ask about for you on some of the euro forums re 9.5 widths what are the options on offset so that I can get some input for you.

Beleive I think it will look spot on with 9.5inch as with mine on 8.5 inch just does not make the back look phat enough.

Let me know and I will get back to you ?

ok the offset for all 4 wheels is ET30, 8.5x18 front, 9.5x18 rear. i suppose my limit should be 235 wide at the rear max. but i do not want to use a 35 profile anywhere on the car. cheers mate.

What have u got agianst 35 profile? do u not understand that 225 40 will BE THE SAME as 245/35 or 255/35!!!

If u had 205 40 and 265 35 believe it or not the 35 will be fatter then the 40 ...

im lead to beleave and in past experiance the lower the profile the harsher/bumpier the ride becomes. 40's are bad enough at the moment!

Imran I think what mike is worried about is not the profile height but if it will fir under the arch ??

Are you able to clarify on that issue cause I would imagine if you run a 245/35 then from what you are saying it would negate the clearance issue ?

Well if you read my post and understood it then you would know i was wondering about ride comfort using a 35 profile on the ass end over a 40.[8)] i appreciate the 35 may *look* the same as a 40, but im more concered about ride comfort as i tend to carry a few people at times.

Ok Imran understood so the fact that the tyre is wider it automatically has a larger tyre wall area than a smaller width tyre with the same tyre wall size.

Bloody confusing but understood, I take it that web link you posted give's you a calculation so that you do not have the wrong rolling diameter front to rear ?

So mike I think the question for you is still would you need to use a tyre regardless if wall width that will stretch over the wheel to allow clearance of the arch or will the correct width tyre for that width of rim clear the arch correct ?

Ok mate but explain to me why 2 tyres that r the same thickness (not width) with 40profile and one with 35profile written on it ..... why would the 35 be a harder ride?
