8v. A 2.0 16v was fitted to the mk3 giving 150bhp, never made it to mk 4. The Passat has had a 2.0 20v 130 bhp unit for a year or two though...

I think its clever marketing - if the 2.0 golf was too pokey, it would take sales from the 1.8t, and lose any insurance benefits...

GTI's have been... (not including diesels)

Mk2 1.8 8v/16v ?/136 bhp

Mk3 2.0 8v/16v (115/150 bhp)

Mk4 2.0 8v (115bhp) and the 1.8t's obviously.

Original Mk4 GTI was 1.8 20v. That was replaced by the current 2.0 8v which has less power but better torque spread.

130 bhp 2.0 in Passat is 20v and I'm fairly sure that the new 2.0FSI is 16v

Do you think the Mk5 GTi 2.0T has the same block as the Mk4 2.0. If so the exhaust manifold could be similar, thus could a turbo be fitted as long as there is space. It may sound to be a bit wild, bit its just an thought

Same cubic capacity so probably the same block. However the manifold connects to the head and I'm sure they are completely different from the 8v.
