It's getting close to desision time about some new wheels and I just wanted to know what people's opinions are of 18" or 19".

I know 18" will fit fine and the GTI's have them so the ride must be ok.

But has anyone got 19"s? What's the ride like I'll be having eibach springs fitted at the same time so it will be lowered 30mm.

I'm all ears [:)]

Hiya

I've got 18's on mine and I think they are absolutely spot on. I honestly think that 19's in my design alloy would be just *too* big.

My 2p.[:)]

I think its about getting the correct width.... 8.5" wide and you may need arch rolling. 8x19's are not that common i've found (most are 8.5x19) so bit restricted on choices.

Fair point this, my 8" wide wheels sit completely flush with the arch. I imagine if they were any wider and lowered you might very well experience scrubbing. Just a thought.

Be wary when you get 19" wheels on the MkV. I've got some beautiful 19"
River Wheels on my MkV GTI with 235/35 tyres and have started
encountering a problem. There is plenty of clearance under the wheel
arch, but on the front wheel arches there are two parts to the liner
which are held together by a small bolt assembly that sticks out a
little bit from the rest of the arch liner. This means that if the car
is with a medium load (Ie, my 100kg friend sits in the passenger side
(i'm 60kg so pretty light)) then there is a serious problem going over
bumps and dips in the road, as the tip of the bolt scrapes the wheel.
My car's been in to EuroCanterbury for almost four days on and off
while they tried to work out this problem before they found it was the
wheels touching the bolt. It's only for a fraction of a second, but it
is still dangerous.

This problem will be avoided if you stiffen the springs of your car,
but then that will affect the ride. The other two options are to either
raise the car very slightly (by 3-5mm, which is what I might have done)
or to see if you could flatten or file down the bolt. VW advised me
against this for maintenance purposes. I'm going to see if there's any
way I can reduce the size of the bolt without causing trouble, or
failing that I will have the car raised just enough that the wheels
clear the arch. I'm very happy with the ride of the car, especially
with the 235/35 tyres, and the car is fine if it's just me sitting in -
so I probably won't have the suspension changed/stiffened.

If you have the eibach springs fitted and the car lowered by 30mm, make
sure that you're allowing enough clearance for that bolt (since 30mm
seems to me that it will touch the tyres anyway) or, if you have
clearance, that the springs are very stiff.

Good luck, and I'll be sure to let you know how I get on - I should
have the work done to the car within the next week and a half.

I'm actually going now to have the work done! I spoke to the company
that fitted the wheels, and they acknowledged that this is something
that they should have caught (having informed me that the wheels would
fit perfectly without any trouble on a MkV GTI), and they've offered to
do the work for free. They're going to have a quick look at it before
they decide exactly what to do, but whatever it is it should be done by
day's end and I'll let you know how I get on.
