Car: Bora TDI 130, 2001 with 71,000 miles and a tuning box from Garfie fitted.

Had the car go into limp mode while pulling up Clee hill nicely in 6th. Stopped at the top, turned the engine off for a few minutes and carried on as normal. Same journey had this happen a few more times. When I got back home I ran VAG-COM and came up with:

1 Fault Found:
17965 - Charge Pressure Control: Positive Deviation
P1557 - 35-00 - -

Read on here about a few more people with the same poblem so checked all the pipe work with no problems found so ordered myself a new N75 valve (at a reasonable, I thought anyway, ?27 from the stealers!). Changed over the N75 valve and for a week it was like a new car. Being the child that I am, I let it lie for a few days before giving it some welly (technical term!) to see if the problem was cured and alas it happened again (only managed it once so far though). The car does go a lot better for the new valve so I'm convinced that it was on it's way out anyway but fear it was only part of the problem.

Now my main concern is it the variable vanes are sticking in the turbo. So measured the boost and get the following:

All the above taken without the car going into limp mode.

Now my questions:

1. For the range VAG-COM says actual pressure 2100-2600 mb. Anyone know if these limits are hard set of may the readings go over that and be ok? Like mine at 2808mb,is this acceptable or definatly very wrong?
2. Anyone know how much lag/difference is usually between spec value and actual value?
3. Would these values be consistant with sticking/stuck vanes?
4. Lastly, is there anyone out there with any other ideas about this problem?

Many thanks and sorry it goes on a bit.

Wow, from those figures you can really see where the torque sledgehammers hits !

As for your problem, I'd say;

a dicked MAP sensor

or

a sticky VNT mechanism on the turbo.

Hi there BB

Well impressed with your problem description, my standard 150 tdi is also givine me a few hic-ups and my fault code is as follows

17964 charge pressure control, Negative deviation,P1556-3500-- any suggestions ? it sounds as if your turbo needs the same attention as mine and is much more common on 130 hp engines. Remove and strip the exhaust side of the blower, 99 out of 100 the variable vane mechanism is stuck and it can only be corrected by stripping and cleaning and putting back onto the engine.. Best of luck

Thanks guys for all the help and replies, but still no luck for me. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

So far:
1. I've had a vacuum gauge on the line from the N75 valve to the actuator on the VNT actuator and this hold a vacuum so I'm assuming no hole in there.
2. Had the MAP sensor out (right pain as screws were quite badly corroded) and cleaned this with so brake cleaning fluid stuff. I know so people on this forum say if the ceramic disk is cracked that's the problem, but there wasn't a ceramic disk on mine (may be the problem?), so does anyone have a picture of this part?
3. MAF has also come out and been cleaned.
4. Even taken off the tuning box to see if it makes a difference (glad it didn?t [:D] ).<o:p></o:p>

From here on I don't think I?ve got much choice to see about either a new turbo (ouch) or taking it off and cleaning it up. Although one thing that puts me off is that the actuator does move quite freely, probably around 45 degrees (anyone know if this is right??). Other option I have for ?27 is to try another N75 valve. This did make quite a difference for a while when I changed it the first time but didn't last long and I have heard of people getting duff ones from VW!!<o:p></o:p>

leetdi22, I think you can get this problem on all PD engines (could be wrong, maybe someone else could confirm?). The N75 valve on the 130 (ASZ) is located at the rear wall of the engine bay just slightly to the passenger side (UK/right hand drive). There's a group of 3 valves that look similar, part number of mine is 1J0 906 627 B, and is the one clossest to the passenger side (might be an A on yours).

For anyone interested, the following picture might explain my problem a little better. This was logged with VAG-COM then plotted in Excel. This run didn't put the engine into limp mode, sometimes it does. You can see the actual boost way exceeding the requested and when it peaks the value is 2954mb! If anyone can do this for a normal running car i'd be interested to see how it compares.

Thanks leetdi, that would be great. Basically, using VAG-COM s elect 01-Engine, then s elect Measuing Block and it's group/block 11 to log. As you can see I've done this over a few gears, foot to the floor in each gear (legally of course). I start in second then go through them as far as I can. Once complete, open the logged file in excel and produce a graph of the relavent results (or e-mail them to me and I'll do the rest).

I know that's a bit short, but don't know how familiar you are with all this. I'm away for a few days now but will do a proper walk through when I get back.

Thanks again,

BB.

Thread is 4-5 years old so dont expect a fast response. Positive deviation usually means sticking vanes in the turbo or he actuator getting stuck.. Try wigglibng the actuator about and wd40 ing it..

Yes it was the turbo that was the problem. In the end I just had it replaced for a new one. Could have stripped it down and cleaned I guess but if it was coming off I wasn't risking it going again. New one it was and still going strong with the tuning box back on and 130,000 on the clock!

Golf MK IV GT TDI 130 2002 - I had the same issue.

Had a guy come and do VAG-COM diagnosis and came up with the same code and fault.

He was actually re-mapping the engine and I asked him to have a look at it.

When he booted the accelerator in neutral, the AP flew off the scale temporarily and a large plume of grey smoke flew out of the exhaust. It went into 'safe mode' and cut out.

He did it again and the AP returned to normal. I took it for a spin with the newly re-mapped engine and all seems fine now - no power loss or limp mode - so far.

What are the chances of the problem being sticky vanes which dislodged with the first blow of pressure when testing?
