Volkswagen is preparing a new performance-orientated diesel Golf, the GT TDi, which should go on sale in the UK before the end of the year. The new car runs a high-tech version of VW?s 2.0-litre four-cylinder pumpe duse turbodiesel engine modified to run piezo injectors (which mix fuel and air more efficiently).

With 168bhp and 258lb ft of torque, the new unit is claimed to push the Golf from zero to 60mph in 7.5sec and on to a top speed of 143mph.

Plans to give the GT TDi the same styling package as the GTi, including the distinctive honeycomb grille, have apparently been canned. Instead, the new model should get its own go-faster styling.

VW has also released details of the four-wheel drive Golf 4Motion. Available with either 138bhp 2.0-litre TDI diesel or 148bhp 2.0-litre FSI petrol power. The 4Motion uses the same Haldex four-wheel-drive system as the last Golf, as will the forthcoming high-performance R32. It normally puts 90 per cent of power through the front wheels, but can put up to 100 per cent to the back wheels.

The 4Motion joins the range in April, for a premium of around ?1000.

Seen in article on the Autocar magazine website.

I wonder will this 168bhp engine be offered in 4mo cars?

There are quite a few high power diesels available now compared to a few years ago when VW had it all to themselves, first with the 110 and finally the 150TDI, but now even the Astra has that and the new Alfa Brera, 2.4 will have 200bhp !

I keep hoping they will release a 2.5/3L 200bhp+ 4mo GTD-TDI-R to knock the rest back for a while. :)

ooh - i like the rear valence....that must be the GTi - my car's having that look of tailpipe on monday at milltek!

Thanks for posting that Milkfloat.

As for the 168bhp........all PD140 owners can have around 180hp with a 400 quid chip already......

That is the gti valance and I can't wait to see pics of yours Foxy and also your opinion of the difference it makes!!

So i guess with a Miltek and a decent remap then us 140 ownder should be looking at a motor that is quicker than the 168bhp diesel to both 60 and top end?!?

This is a quote from the Golf GTI mini-site FAQ's

http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/gti/faq

"Will there be a diesel GTI?

Yes, a 2.0-litre TDI PD 160PS is planned as a future addition to the range. Timing is yet to be finalised."

This has been on the official site since before christmas, and would suggest that, even if the power output has risen slightly, the diesel will be given the same styling as the GTI. Lets hope so!

Its not the GTI valance. AFAIK it's the same shape as the standard one but with the cut out. The GTI valance is a completely different shape from standard.

The 4-Motion cars in the UK are going to have the cut out for the exhaust too. Only this and the '4-Motion' badge to distinguish it from the normal GT.

With respect, if you waited about for the next new thing and never took the plunge you'd have no car ever!!! LOL!!

I'm not suggesting potential new buyers buy a 140, but if you have a 140 already and it's still new enough, just chip it !!

Does anyone else think a top speed of 143mph seems a bit 'high'?

Considering a GTI has 30bhp more it only does 3mph more, and a 140pd has 30bhp less but has a top speed of 17mph less.

Also, the magazine tests I've read for the GTI did not get near the VW claimed top speed, less than 140 in fact.None of them mentioned why though.

145 looks about right given the Type-R with 200ps hits 146mph - it's lighter though.
