Apparently the 130PD is now in the same insurance group as the 150.

Can someone confirm this? Also I would like to know why this is?

The main reason I bought the 130 instead od the 150 was because of insurance. Now if the insurance now seem fit to put it in the same group as the 150 I shall want to know who makes these decisions as I feel one hell of a legal case coming on.

Oh my god - Ive just found out that the 130 is not only in the same group as the 150, but its also in the same group as the 170BHP V5!!! <img src=images/icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

I feel a serious legal case mounting against the ABI here - anyone else care to join me?

Nick - I am seeing my dad tonight who is just about a legal expert - with friends in very high places - so Ill be having a chat with him about it.

look at the power diferences alone - never mind the sports suspension on the 150, the larger wheels, the recaro seats, the badging of it as GTI etc - how can our cars be justified to be in the same insurance group???

Chaps - I have written and sent an email to ABI.

I have written the mail professionaly and politely, but reading between the lines it asks for someone with half a cerebrum to tell me why our cars (TDI 130)should be placed in the same insurance group as another model of the SAME VEHICLE that has:

Sports suspension,

Larger and more expensive alloy wheels

Higher powered engine

Recaro seats

andis badged as GTI - making it more proneto joy rider theft attempts.

Basically seing as these are the same car (both VW Golfs) there is no reason for the two differing models to be put in this same group.

If I was comparing a ford focus and a vw golf then there maybe security issues, differen brakes, wheel, chssis etc. which would affect the insurace raing. However as these are the same car, with differing power outpus etc then there is no justification for it.

Hows about putting the 1.1 Metro GLSin the same insurance group as the Metro 6R4?? What about the Ford Escort 1.4 bonus - surely by this logic it should be in the same insurance group as a Cosworth?

I am not going to let this drop =- if there is one thing in this world that really gets my back up, its people extracting the urine.

I dont care if VW have to pay the extra on my insurance or the ABI have to lower the grouping, but I am not standing for it - not now not ever.

If you want to be heard - please send me an email to my private address ([email protected]) listing your name and address, Ill make sure that if I get anywhere with this that you shall be given the same.

Count me in - even if I have got wheels and suspension off 150 on my car....

I'm not sure what the legal position will be - ABI have presumably checked that they can legally do this! What I really want to know is an explanation of why - but presume it is to do with real performance stats, driver profiles, and increased popularity of 130 on fleets.

Pissed off - my insurance is due next month! I'll see what the insurers quote (although haven't got much of a benchmark to compare against as only acquired car half way through year).

I've checked on the ABI website and YES they are both group 14. I think we should launch a campaign on VW UK to get this changed.

Sorry Gents not too clued up on the Diesel Engines but what is the engine size of the 130 and 150

Dose there ratings not go on engine size like the V5 was a 2.3 150 and now is a 2.3 170 but still in the same group

Example

1.9 130

1.9 150

It used to, but there was only about 8 groups then. They then changed the system, added more groups and judged each model individually.

I remember when they did it as the insurance for my XR3 doubled overnight and cost more than my mates Capri 2.8i special.

Golf V5 - surely that cant be right mate. I own a standard Impreza at the moment and its a lot cheaper than an STi on insurance - they're both 2.0 litre turbo's.

I read this thread a few times and thought that cant be right! a 130tdi and 150tdi with the same insurance group..

I have just had my renewal put through the door, ?856 for my GROUP14!!! 130tdi!!!

I phoned my insurance company (Norwich union) and gave off stink!!

They came back with a reduced quote ?805.

I finally phoned a few more companies, some only quote the car as being group 12.

Royal sun Alliance came up trumps at ?770!!!

Last year quote was ?710....

(Remember guys I live in Northern Ireland, insurance is a real rip-off over here!!!)

Basically what I am saying is I'm p~~~ed off cause I would have bought a 150tdi!!! butthe moral of the story is Phone around!!!

Just a quick note before I go out andget blind drunk on the works doo...

I have had an email from the abi - about time too!

They say that cars should be easily identifiable as to what particular model is being bought by both new car purchasers and second hand. (Ill post the actual email when I get chance)

Basically I have outlined that the 150 is badged as GTI and the 130 as TDI - so no-one wanting a GTI can end up with a TDI and vice versa.

They are in communication with Volkswagen at the moment. The tone of the mail sounds positive in our favour so thats a start.

Ill let people know what happens next - but rest assured - If I have to get the person responsible for taking the decision to put the 130 in the same group as the 150, to accompany me to a VW dealer and look at the cars with his own two eyes, thats what Im going to do to get this stupid and ignorant decision revoked.

People have taken the pee for too long - and Ive had enough....

Anyone seen the film "Falling Down" ???

Not heard anything else yet - so instead of waiting for the abi to talk to VW - (which could be never) Ive decided to do my own research and construct my own report - with the aide of a digital camera and my Local VW garage.

Now there is no confusing a 150 for a 130 and vice versa as these cars are badged as GTI and TDI respectively. However - there are 90, 100 and 110 TDI's that have the same colour badging as the 130 I believe - I saw a TDI with red D and red I today, but it had black bump strips - so wasnt the 130.

The only problem I can forsee is that I may end up getting all TDI's put in the same group as the 130 - sorry folks....

Keep up the good work!!!!

IMHO try to focus on the differences between the cars, as this badging issue is something VW use to confuse. Only the 100, 115 and 130 cars should be badged TDI

instead use the bits about wheels, suspension.etc...

Ill make sure that I concentrate on all the different aspects of the cars, including the badging.

At least if I put a thorough report together, if the ABI dont act on it - I will be able to send the same report to other people such as watchdog and VW themselves etc without sounding like just another moaner.
