4540 Views 14 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Chris.
Im looking at potentially swapping an r32 engine into my 1.8t gti and just wondering what parts id need to complete this?? Can i use my 5 speed box as it has a lsd fitted already?? I know alot of people will say just sell it and buy an r32 but ive been through alot with this car and spent alot of time and money on it as well so cant bring myself to sell it.

I would have to put my hand up and ask why?

I prefer the 1.8t lump though.
Sell your car and buy an R32.

100% easier.

I have put my hand up when every time this question comes up and ask why not? The question is what parts are needed for the conversion, not what does everyone think of what I want to do to my own car?

You will need the clutch slave cylinder and hard line from an 02m, the driveshafts from the from an 02m (driveshaft bolts are different length from 02j to 02m), you can use the r32 gearbox and just leave the propershaft disconnected. Engine mount is different, but gearbox mount is the same, the gear linkage bracket will need to be from an 02m. All of this assumes you currently have an 02j on the 1.8t, more information needed really. But if my guess is right and you have an 02J then the above needs to be changed.

Whilst anything is technically possible surely there comes a point when you have to hold your hands up and say it's too much time and money.

Whilst the above isn't perhaps too far out of reach it does leave me wondering why people would do this because the car would still be a 1.8 come resale time.

Of course owner preference is key here and fair play to him if he does achieve it. For most people though it's possibly too far out of reach so naturally a reactive rather than proactive reply will often be posted.

Different strokes for different folks as they say.Not everyone wants to do the turbo thing which has been done to death a gerzillion times, the o/p has spent a lot of time and money on his car and an engine swap whether it's an R32 or Briggs and Stratton lawnmower engine is the next step.A labour of love like this has no consideration for selling it on and how much it's worth,in terms of man hours it's almost priceless.

But.................putting an R32 engine into a car that wasn't originally an R is something I'd never think of doing.I always wanted an R32 from the first time I drove one back in 2002 (ish),and nothing less than a whole and genuine R would keep me happy.I wanted the whole thing, the big displacement n/a engine, the V6 sound, the seats, the chassis, the 4 wheel drive etc etc.I wouldn't be happy with that engine in anything else, while other people want the challenge of making something their own and say blow the expense or impracticality of it all :) .

Will have to be a R32 box as the bell housing is different bolt pattern.
Im after doing the opposite .... fitting an r32 with a 1.8t :D

4wd wasted unless huge power. IMHO.
Huge power ... check! :D

i have been reading to much rockmonkey build thread ... and have 2 petrol 1.8t engines to play with.
400BHP plus needs 4wd IMHO. I cope ok with 360 :D

400bhp is the minimum id go for, or not bother at all.

I don't know how you manage with no LSD. You will benefit massive from one at that sort of power. I get proper use of a Quaife ATB with just 190bhp 310lb-ft.

Nice build btw Chris.
lsd is a must on a fwd, 4wd benefits too, but I loved having LSD on my fwd mk4, it handled lovely, quite a few of my mates from the ariel atom group inquired when they noticed the mk4 gaining on them in the corners lol I'm going to have to put up without an LSD in the 4motion initially. But honestly it redefines how the car can be driven.
I have a LSD. Can still make it pull me across the road if you boot it off a roundabout and weight is leaning on the drivers side wheel (and road bearing left). Makes fun sometimes. Been a couple times ive lifted off for a corner and felt worse off...then remembered I have a diff and it will pull me round the corner :D
