Have just got off the phone to my cuz in Germany and he has just had a 1.8T off the ramps.

The customer went to see my cuz (a mechanic) for a service. The customer wanted more power but without making it obviois so fitted an induction kit and (drum roll...) a new downpipe.

The downpipe does not have a silencer - IE free flowing and the customer has not fitted no other exhaust mods. The results are tremendous. The car revved much easily and accelleration was much more faster.

But the torque was increased - car is not on the rollers yet but the customer had the biggest smile on his face!!

Also gave a sporty tone!!

i have had a few of these downpipes sent over and we are about to fit one to a 1.8T and if we have time, mine!

i know a few people who have Millteks and are interested in one of these downpipes as even the Millteks have silencers on the downpipe.

The best bit is that these will break the bank (i hope!!)

Will keep you guys posted!!

MKIV Turbo - indeed i have the early non turbo, but i am certain there will be a gain rather than a loss as i know the silencers are very restrictive....

some gain is better than no gain!!

More importantly the 1.8T guinea pig should be down at 2..

will let you guys know!!

since when does the DP have a silencer?.... and i thought that it wasnt restricting flow at all... its still pretty much straight through aint it with a big sort of box to 'silence' or dull the noise?

Interested to see what you find tho...

my bad folks - its a centre pipe i am reffering to!! ie after the cat, before the backbox!!

the 1.8T was impressed with the results - revved to 5k much more freely and throttle response was also improved. He also swears the acceleration is faster to 60. Turbo lag was slightly reduced.

mine came down from the ramps and after a spin around the block, i had a massive grin on my face! induction roar was more noticable and again it was revving freely - cannot believe how much difference it made!!

we have 4 centre pipes in the workshop, prices are ?54 delivered....

any takers?

OK so we're talking about a straight pipe instead of the resonator (i.e the middle silencer), is that right? How much more noise and how much more go do you reckon?

BTW, Milltek does offer a similar option on their systems but I've no idea how much. I think at least one person on here has one.

Here's a quote on fitting one of these to a 1.8T. The context was rattling from the centre silencer but he doesn't mention any performance increase either. It's not conclusive but I might contact him to ask.

"well, i just wanted to give you guys a quick update.

after i told them that my resonator was rattling against the heat shield, greg and pete kindly sent me the non-resonated piece.

i just got it installed and FINALLY no more rattling! it is, however, obviously louder than the resonated version, but not nearly as loud as a lot of the other systems out there. the note is a little higher than before (but doesn't sound anything close to a civic). and at cruising speed 50mph and below, i can hear a constant note--not a drone, but the note of the exhaust (which i couldn't hear before since the resonated is nearly as quiet as stock). at 60mph however it was silent like the resonated system.

overall, it will take me a little time to get used to the new sound, but i'm happy with the results. a more sporty tone with no more rattling. "
