Just to use someone else's photo.. hope ya don't mind Tom !

Posted Image

On the far left hand side of the picture, just above the middle.

My left side (as you look at the engine from above in front of the car) engine mount on the gearbox side is a bit knackered and needs replacing, the rubber is chafing off and after 71000 miles it's probably past it's best !

What part number is that ? Can you buy either side or do they only come in pairs or should they both be replaced at the same time ??

Anything else I should know or get changed ? Any advice appreciated ! [Y] [:)]

Get some VF mounts! [6]

If the other side is in good nick (and to be honest you'd be hard pushed to tell by visual inspection alone, you'd need some super gadget for measuring the stiffness - maybe one of those thingie-meters you got at work? [;)]) then you could probably get away with doing the one but ideally you should do the pair to even distribute the vibration.

How about a nice shiny dog bone while ya at it [;)]

I've got some cans of blue paint...

The vf ones are circa 160 each plus vat iirc [:O] (I paid 150 second hand for the pair of mine[H]) you can buy each mount from the stealers you will also need the bolts that go through the mount into the block or gearbox, you don't need to replace the mount to chassis ones.

You'll also need a crane ideally to support the weight while changing and a haynes manual or photocopy of a page [;)] telling you the mounts alignment requirements

Jesus !! ?320 for the pair is too much unless I could get a deal like you did on ebay but I think that's doubtful, not exactly a common piece to come up for sale !

Any more with part numbers ??

Well, took it to the local vw specialists who have done some work in the past for me and he rocked the engine on the mount and agreed it was a bit slack, so he is gonna ring me back today with some prices.

He said it wouldn't be necessary to get the engine mount done as it still feels fine. Or should I get both done ? or can they be changed independently of one another ?

Cheers for the part numbers tom. I'll read them out to him later on and check :) he took the gearbox mount number straight off the top of the part.

Well, this is being done on friday now.  ?85 all done. a bit more than I hoped but i'd rather a critical part such as this was done properly than potentially messed up by me trying to do it myself !

It's really easy Dan especially the gearbox end one, all it needs is 4 bolts and a way of supporting the engine. I can photocopy/scan thge haynes page relateing if you need

Well had this replaced on friday at my local independent vw place. ?85 fitted.  No real discernable difference, but it's only a mount, although i've noticed when putting it in reverse now it seems to crunch a bit, it did it twice this weekend, when it never did it before.  Could this be because the new mount is still quite stiff and not very compliant ?
