Hi folks,

I've just bought a second hand Golf 1.8 GTI Turbo. I've read on this forum that the turbo is supposed to make 'whistles' and other types of cool noises. However, mine seems to be pretty much silent. When exactly are you supposed to hear these 'noises' and which is the best gear to achieve this?

i could hardly hear my turbo when my car was stock. the only chance i had to hear it was at about 3000 rpm in 2nd with the windows down.

To be honest in std form the 1.8t isnt a very turbo like engine. the best way to get the noise is to have a remap.

You'll hear a very quite whistle but not inside the cabin only with the windows down. low gears when you boot it are best but dont think of it like a Jap turbo'd car, these dont show off there boost like MR2s or scooby's. Not unless you get a larger air filter or faster reving turbo, ie a chipped car.

You should be able to hear the dump valve venting, 4th gear lowish speed like 30 MPH, stick your foot to the floor then come off the power. Windows up radio off you will be able to hear the psst.

When you get chipped you can hear the turbo whine and dump-valve pstt much more!

I think the later gti's with the KO3 Sport turbo make more noise as my mum had a KO3 on her gti and didnt make much noise at all, but i have a KO3 Sport turbo on mine and the turbo is pretty loud, lots of woooshhhhh [:D]

just a guess!

The DV is a bosch recirculatory one as standard, if your looking for a louder "whooosh" or "psssst" you will need to fit an atmospheric DV which "dumps" the air into the atmosphere, not back into the system.

If you modify the air intake system (fit an induction kit) you will get a louder sound out of the standard DV because there is less to keep the sound in!

I can here my standard DV when the sterio is on low but when i changed the air filter, i took it for a spin with the air box open, the difference was shocking![:O]

Im reluctant to change it because the sound was so exciting that it would cost me an absolute fortune in petrol![:(]
