Hi there, Ive had my golf for a few years now, its done 82k and is a 1.4 s. I will go through eah problem seperately

1. From cold start i get a tapping sound so i had the tappets changed, it got far worse and louder, the mechanic says that it is due to low oild pressure as the tappets cant fill with oil and is a commen problem. Once my engine has been running for a while its fine. im not so sure oil pressure is the problem? Any other suggestions or how pricy is this to fix if it is the oil pressure

2. Im alwyas losing oil!!!!! it tends to be a high revs but in a month of driving i have more or lesss no oil!!!! the mechanic again says low oil pressure but this i believe is to worn piston rings surely!!! also i must admid i did not cheak my oil for a while and had been runninjg on min for a while which would of surely added wear to the piston rings and will casue this oil loss out the exhaust. My tailgate is allways black from the oil

3. constant stalling especially when say doing a 3 point turn!! no idea y, been annoying me for ages, had a new cam belt so the idle belt is running fine. HELP????

I have hered many bad things about my engine that there are many commen problems, any one else feel free to add comments about this engine!!!!

Hi,

I have a 1.4 with 80,000 miles on, I too have the tappet noise on start up but it soon goes. What oil are you using, have you tried a thinner oil something like mobile 1 or fully synthetic oil. Mine seems it like a lot less noise and no oil loss.

Oil loss could be down to a leak, worn piston rings, using the wrong oil or the breather pipe being blocked. This could be linked to the rough idle stalling as when the breather gets blocked it pushes up oil into the air filter housing covering the filter with oil and causing the throttle butterfly to stick which leads to stalling rough idling.

Whip off the air filter housing and have a look at your filter and down the throttle body if there's a load of oil then you know or have a good idea that the breather either needs cleaning or replacing. While your there you can clean the throttle body/butterfly with carb cleaner this will cure the stalling. It might be worth while changing the spark plugs at the same time if your using oil.

yeh tryed the thin oil when i had the tappet change, still aint worked, its supposed to be a commem problem the oil pressure but it is soooo anoying!!! And to fix proply will cost more than the cars worth, its almost an insurance right off.

Yeh the throttle body etc could prob do with a good clean!!! But i still think that its piston rings is cloging everything up and its due a 80,000 service so i think i will give it a good going over and hope that iproooves the stalling,

Do you know what needs to be done on the 80k service? oil change, oild filter, air filter, petrol filte, spark plugs, have i missed anything?

I found the reson that it was stalling before was that the idler belt had snapped and once i had it done it was fine again so it could also be that hte ideler belt has come off......

Hi,

ive also got the 1.4 golf on 62,500 miles

ive got the tapping noise on mine too. recently ive started getting a strong vibration when cold.

my car is also drinking oil and there are no leaks (had it on the ramp a few times to make sure and when 60k service done mechanic told me i got worn piston rings)

the car failed its MOT in july because of emissions being 3 time higher than normal. im also getting a lot soot on the tail gate as well and had a little bit of smoke at times.

any solutions?

Hi,

have you checked the air filter housing, if it's covered in oil inside the oil is being pushed up through the crankcase breather housing. This will clogg the throttle butterfly and lead to rough idle/stalling. If you have this problem you could install an oil catch tank, will reduce emmision's but you will still have to get to the bottom of why it's doing it. i have been told by my vw parts guy, the breather housing gets blocked and causes oil to be pushed up, replacing/cleaning the housing solves it.

Mine's coming up to 82,000 miles no loss of oil I have used mobil 1 etc I'm currently using Chevron full synthetic no problems at all. If you are doing the servcie yourself, I would change the oil, oil filter, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter. It might seem a lot, but it still works out cheaper than paying someone else to do it. I change the oil,oil filter, spark plugs, air filter every 10,000 miles and fuel filter every 20,000 miles.

I've been told you cannot rebore the cyclinders on the 1.4 due to it's casting/metal type, think it's in the haynes manual. Plenty of 1.4 engines on fleabay.

Let us know how you get on.

Mine used to drink oil. I keep a 5 litre bottle in the boot! Basically it was the Lambda sensor on the exhaust which was faulty. It might be the same for you? Might be worth getting your car plugged into Vagcom (computer) and seeing if its bringing up any problems with your sensors!

haha and i thought it was just my engine! same problem on mine tapping from cold then goes away after a slight warm up i have been assured by a mechanic that its nothing to worry about unless the tapping stays once warmed up, i would like to quieten it down abit though i was considering that engine flush??and a fresh oil filter and oil i have been advised mobil 1 is top notch :)

I think the problem with these engines is they are used hard due to the weight of the mk4. This takes its toll at higher mileage unfortunately, and if you search around this forum there is alot of 1.4 'oil' issues. Whether this be the engine drinking oil or otherwise.

IMO the problem is with the piston rings/block. The 1.4 uses an aluminium block, which when driven hard from cold and/or with very oil as many seem to do, they wear extremely fast compared to a cast iron block. Unfortunately the piston rings CANNOT be changed on the aluminium block engine. Once worn the block must be replaced - and they come from VW built up with crank, rods and pistons. I believe the reason for this is just changing the piston rings is not enough, and the block will be too worn hence new piston rings not helping the situation.

It is also common for these engine to become 'tappety'. My advice is make sure when you change your oil you use an engine flush and go for the right weight and high quality oil. As for oil pressure being low, if overly long oil changes have been carried out, a build up of crap could cause this. (Hence the reason for a good engine flush when changing the oil)

Personally I always use 5w-30 mobil1, and have never had problems. Although saying that my engine was only on something like 50k or less before I rebuilt it. (Not due to oil problems though.)

WooHoo! i thought it was just my engine that made funny noises! mine has the tapping noise aswel, it goes away when warmed up and mine has recently been serviced and m.o.t'ed neither mechanic said there was anything wrong.

what veedubdude said is correct, the 1.4 engines are very hard worked in the golf so thery are inevitably going to wear

mines is on 55k

Hmmmmmmmmm i dont get any tapping..... cars done 79k. I had the problem that you were having when i first got my car though, kept stalling when coming to a junction or tight parking! Was easily sorted by having my injection system cleaned out, easy cheap job! No problems from now on, had it for months without the problem!. ( touch wood )

Hi Mate

Currently having these problems, i cured my stalling by opening up the airbox and spraying some £5 Carb Cleaner from halfrauds. As for the oil its due usually as your engine wears the seals become brittle resulting in Higher oil consumption, therefore you burn oil alot quicker in higher mileage vehicles. I tomorow will be switching from 10w-40 oil to 15w-40 as its just that bit thicker and shouldnt hopefully burn as quick because i have had my car for about 3-4months and done over 10L of oil.

Hope it helps at least a tad
