My 06 plate Golf is due a 20k service, its the first one i need to do since i got it.

I was wondering what exactly needs replacing and what VW will check, called up the stealers for a quote on the service and its £300 (apprently 20k is a major service)

Just need advice if i should get it done at VW or not?

you don't have to go to VW - just use VW parts. VW will price match local garages though

    Current car - crap mk5 & 2008 A4 avant s-line
    Previous car - crap mk4 1.8T
    Prior to that - 2xmk2s, a mk1, a Beetle

    Getting a bit samey, ain't it ?

Try Seat and Skoda garages too, as they have access to the same VW parts and would have expierience with other golf mk5 platform car, but (usually) charge considerally cheaper prices for servicing.

My first service at 16k (classed by them as the 20k one) was only £160. That invovled oil and filter change and bags of labour.

Agreed, they do price match, but i only tried that against another franchised dealer.

     Nice one!!

Thanks for the advice people, managed to book the car in for the service at VW Wayside Letchworth the guy quoted me £131.81 inc VAT for the oil and oil filter change.

Also advised that I get the brake fluid and Air con re gassed. Recommended by VW but not in the service schedual.

So jus gonna get the oil service and brake fluid change (additional £79 inc VAT).

Sorry guys just another thing, when I was calling up VW garages to get a quote on the service, they were quoting me on all sorts of other things to:

    Fuel Filter change

    Sunk plug change

    Pollen Filter change

    Coolant Change

    Air Filter change

And the prices did vary alot.....im just a little confused why different VW garages quote that different items need to be replaced.

My first service was at around 17,000 miles and cost £220.. they did it whilst I waited and washed the car in about 1hr 45. Watch out for the trick with the coolant level, the service adviser told me it was low and would I like it topped up. I stupidly said yes and it cost me an extra £17 for maybe 20ml of coolant ( they charge for labour and 1ltr of fluid).

I hav'nt been to Wayside in Letchworth but have used the branch in St.Albans and been well impressed there. So much better than Abridge who I used for the above service.

Hope this info is of use to you
