    Guys,

I have dropped my santa monicas off to be fully refirbish as they were suffering from the usual peeling problem. When i dropped them off the guy mentioned to me the the allen key studs that are on the wheel are plastic and would melt in the oven, so they will have to be removed.

Bascially what im asking is can i get replacement studs from VW as im sure this must happen quite alot with these wheels.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks for looking!

    Ben.

They look like they are plastic coated with something to look like metal. I will wait to see what they come back like. Thanks for looking for me though.

    Are yours Genuine or Reps?

Mine are 100% genuine and they have metal studs, who told you they were plastic mate?

Strange then... as mine are 100% genuine and from the looks of it the studs are plastic as one looks like the paint has worn off. Also my tyre fitter told me that they were plasic, but i could be wrong obviously lol.

Do you think the studs would be difficult to remove, assuming they are metal?

It's just my Santa's are going in for a refurb this week and i've been told by the company doing them that they wouldn't remove them as they are 1 piece wheels.

Was thinking on giving it a go myself, just praying i don't snap a stud.

Also any ideas where to get spare studs as VW dealer can't supply them?

    Cheers

The Santa's on my 2003 V6 4motion were genuine VW and the small bolts were PLASTIC. I know because some **** had a go at removing them while the car was on my driveway - I found the missing bolt in my garden - the plastic base was sheered away.

I tried two dealers for a replacement bolt, Leicester and Loughborough, no luck. I also posted here but no joy.

All four were replaced under warranty with one month to go, due to the lacquor peeling, much the same problem as you are experiencing I guess.

Damn, that ain't good news at all. So chances are they would shear off if i tried to remove them. And the plastic will melt when put in the oven to bake the powder-coat if i don't remove them.

I'm toying more and more with the idea of selling these bloody wheels.

That puts my mind at rest, thanks for confirming your genuines have plastic studs also.

I have been informed by the company that refirbished the wheels that you can buy the replacement studs from a diy shop near me so i shall look into it myself and update this post when i have found the answer.

At the moment im running my newly refirbed santas with no studs, and i still think the look the dogs danglies.

I'm not sure how you would replace them unless you get another plastic (or metal) and glue it into position. I got the impression that all they are is a stalk with a nut on the end, no thread or anything that screws in. Mine had sheered off at the stalk. I've looked for the one I found in my garden to photograph and show you, but I must have slung it.

Change of plan now, (fingers crossed). Spoke to the guy who split and refurbed my BBS rims when i had my Polo and he has dealt with fake studs before.

He's not sure whether the originals are plastic or not but he can supply sort of like an allen key bolt which he can bond into the holes once the old ones are removed.

So here's hoping they should be sorted soon.  Going for a power-coat finish on them.
