I'm jittering with all of this gearbox failures!
Mine has been awful for a few months, doesn't always go into first, makes really horrible whirring noise in reverse. Its only almost 4 years old, 49k miles. Not on the way out maybe?

How old / mileage is your car Rye?

And my gearbox has gone today too. [:(!]

    T-reg 1999 1.6 SE with 74k miles.

I'm getting the gearbox and clutch replaced for about £1k which seems to be a reasonable rate. VW, as you say, want about £1700 including the fitting.

    Unexpected expenses sure do hurt!
